Education
After the Unification of Italy, Victor Emmanuel II was celebrated as pater patriae, therefore the statues of this king can be found in many Italian squares. This 3D object – a detail from the bronze statue in Giulianova, in the province of Teramo – can contribute both to the knowledge of the king’s iconography and to deepening the understanding of Raffaello Pagliaccetti, a nineteenth-century Abruzzese sculptor who had a brilliant career in Florence. The statue of Victor Emmanuel II is an example of Pagliaccetti’s gift as a portraitist.
Social and cultural aspects
Born in Giulianova in 1839, Raffaello Pagliaccetti stood out as a highly appreciated professor at the Accademia di Belle Art in Florence. He is considered as one of the leaders of the veristic tendency of nineteenth-century Florentine sculpture. He was highly appreciated as a portraitist. Many works from him are now exhibited in the Sala Pagliaccetti of the Polo Civico Museale di Giulianova. In 1913, thirteen years after Pagliaccetti’s death, Giulianova gave birth to another very talented bronze sculptor like Venanzo Crocetti, well represented in the Contemporary Sculpture Garden Unite Museum.
