Visit to SCAYLE. 2nd round of the immersive experience through the VRSciT project

Date: 12-07-2023
Location: León, Spain

Description
On 12 July 2023, during the development of the important international event Cybersecurity Summer BootCamp, which was being held in León. A second workshop on the advantages of using virtualised environments was organised again at the Supercomputing Centre of Castilla y León, SCAYLE, but in this case and due to the theme of the event and the type of participants, focused on the aspect of security in particularly sensitive environments, such as, for example, data centres.
On this occasion, there were participants from Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina and also Spain.
The participants were technical staff working in Incident Response Centres, members of law enforcement agencies working in operational units related to cybersecurity and Policy Makers, active staff belonging to the judicial or prosecutorial careers, State attorneys, civil servants from the Justice Administration and staff from regulatory or legislative bodies working in areas related to the legal and regulatory aspects of cybersecurity.
The number of people who participated in this workshop was 23. Of these, 6 were international and 17 came from different parts of Spain.
Given the professional characteristics of the attendees, special emphasis was placed on how these technological tools for virtual representation can be of great help in protecting such sensitive spaces from the point of view of cybersecurity, such as SCAYLE and its data centres. Due to the highly restrictive regulations (National Security Scheme) that protect some of SCAYLE's spaces, it is a very good solution that these spaces can be visited virtually and with immersive technologies in which, for example, the loud noise of the facilities can be perceived.
As on the previous day, in order to contextualise and to ensure that the visitors understood what they were going to be shown in the SPOT of the VRSciT project, first of all, they were introduced to the type of scientific and technological infrastructures that they were going to find on their physical visit, so that they could compare them with the subsequent virtual visit, and they were also instructed on the contents that they were going to find virtually about the other partners in the project. The 360º videos made during the action, the 3D objects, the project website, the lessons plan and the online web toolkit.
At the end of the theoretical presentation, and due to the small size of our data centres, as well as the restrictive legislation that affects them, the group of participants was divided. One part of the group visited the physical part of the SCAYLE infrastructures, while the other group experimented with the virtual reality glasses and the multimedia contents created in CCVB and then carried out the corresponding survey to evaluate them. The groups then swapped groups, carrying out the same tasks, but logically in reverse.
The results of the surveys confirmed the same positive impressions that were gathered in the first workshop, as well as highlighting the safety of this type of virtual visit compared to the physical, face-to-face visit.

Visit to SCAYLE. First round of the immersive experience through the VRSciT project

Date: 11-07-2023
Location: León, Spain

Description
On 11 July 2023, taking advantage of the 'Summer International Week' taking place at the University of León, a workshop on the advantages of the use of virtualised environments in adult education was organised at the headquarters of the Supercomputing Centre of Castilla y León, SCAYLE.
The workshop was attended by participants from different countries around the world, such as Armenia, Albania, Germany, Israel, Kosovo, Morocco, Montenegro, Senegal, Hungary, Romania, USA and Latvia, as well as some Spanish participants.
In order to contextualise and help the visitors understand what they were going to be shown in the SPOT of the VRSciT project, first of all, they were introduced to the type of technological infrastructures that they were going to find in their subsequent physical visit, so that they could compare them with the subsequent virtual visit and also, they were instructed on the contents that they were going to find virtually about the other partners of the project. Both the 360 videos made during the action, as well as the 3D objects, the project website was shown and the work carried out with the lessons plan and the online web toolkit was shared with them.
At the end of the theoretical presentation, and due to the small size of our data centres, as well as the restrictive legislation due to the Spanish National Security Scheme, the participants were divided into two different groups. The first group visited the physical part of the SCAYLE infrastructures, while the other group experimented with the virtual reality glasses and the multimedia contents created by the Centro Ciência Viva de Bragança and then carried out the corresponding survey to evaluate the contents and the immersive experience. The groups then swapped groups, carrying out the same tasks, but logically in reverse. The attendees were given a printed Yearbook 2022 containing the activities of SCAYLE, page 13 of which mentions the VRSciT project. The downloadable PDF version will be available on the SCAYLE website.
The number and typology of adult educators, all of whom were from universities, who participated in this workshop was 27. Of these 27, 17 were international and 10 from Spain, although among these there were 3 members of the University of León who should not be taken into account, so the final number of participants was 24.
The results of the surveys show that the use of immersive tools through virtual reality technologies work and are liked by educators. They allow experimenting with new ways of getting to know places and cultures without the need for long journeys. It is definitely a good way to complement traditional forms of classical education.

VRSciT Project and Woodwork4.0 – Seminar

Date: 27-06-2023
Location: Bragança, Portugal

Description
This Multiplier event was developed in the Centro Ciência Viva de Bragança, in the Silkhouse Auditorium in June 2023. The workshop intended to establish an aggregating space that is conducive to pedagogical and scientific dialogue that allows to demonstrate the natural diversity and knowledge enrichment that can be produced through the sharing of best practices. It is aimed to acknowledge that we live in a society where the importance of welcoming and including citizens is fundamental. Centro Ciência Viva de Bragança, in close collaboration with the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança, creates a set of participatory activities, such as these, to involve a community of young adults, with the aim of providing dialogue around the scientific aspects of the region and of the host country of the participants. These activities, as a complement to the curriculum, teaching and learning methodologies, facilitate, through inclusive scientific education, the independent development of these citizens, at the academic, technological, social, personal and socio-emotional levels. The aim is the integration of different knowledge (biology, ecology and engineering), with the experiences mentioned by the participants in the multiplier event such as knowing the VR project and the immersive experience of the APP and 3D glasses.
The number and typology of participants directly engaged were 11 participants, all adults, as listed. The contents of the workshop were: to experiment the VR glasses with APP, through the exploration of the 4 videos of the 4 different countries and to experiment the game. Our science communicators were very passionate about explaining the project and introducing the glasses and the immersive experience to the participants, motivating them to try. After the use, they gave us their feedback, so we can improve the experience and immersive feeling. The majority were very pleased to have the chance, since many never tried this technology before. The conclusions achieved was the same as in other events, that the APP is very well design, in terms of scenario, colors, sound, and over all environment of the dashboard. They reported it is intuitive and has a very independent and easy way of being explored, providing autonomy to the end users, which they appreciated.
