Education
The 3D object is provided with nine interactive captions associated to as many points of interest of the statue – in order to stress, for example, that the sculptor has used a real tree trunk, to which the saint was tied with a now lost rope. These captions contribute to make this 3D object an efficient educational tool.
Social and cultural aspects
This wooden statue, carved in 1478, is among the most representative sculptures of the region. Its author, Silvestro di Giacomo di Paolo da Sulmona, called Silvestro dell’Aquila, was one of the most talented artists of the Renaissance period in Abruzzo; well appreciated for his works in marble as well as for his terracottas and woodcarvings, he is documented also as a painter and an architect. Originally the statue was inserted in a now lost painted wooden tabernacle, according to a scheme quite common in the province of L’Aquila. The effigy depicts Saint Sebastian, whose protection was invoked against the pestilence.
