Education
Cod in Portugal is known as the “faithful friend”! It is the faithful friend because in times of war it was there to feed the people, which in times of crisis and hunger (and we know how many there were) was the staple food, which in times of fast imposed by religion was there as an alternative to meat.
Social and cultural aspects
Cod is characteristic of Portugal, often associated with the composition of the Christmas table. It is one of the most popular foods among the Portuguese and its introduction into eating habits is secular. The first indications related to fishing and salting of cod in Portugal, date back to the 14th century. It was at the time of the Discoveries, that the Portuguese saw cod as the ideal fish, which resisted long sea crossings. The pioneers in cod fishing were the Vikings who, in the absence of salt, left the fish to dry in the open air, arranged on the boats. In the Middle Ages, salt was an asset that the Portuguese had and used as a bargaining chip with the Nordic countries, from whom they imported cod and to whom they exported salt.
