Tower of the University of Coimbra

Education
In addition to marking the time, the clock transmitted hourly information through sound signals, produced by the bells associated with it.
Social and cultural aspects
The clock played a pivotal role in university life. It was guided by the entire functioning of the institution. The current one, dated 1866-67, is the latest in a long series of watches. In the same way, this tower replaces, in 1728, the one that until then had exercised identical functions. According to the old statutes, the University clock should be running a quarter of an hour behind the city clock. Of the four bells that take shelter in the tower, the best known is the one that occupies the face facing the river, and the one that has long been given the name of goat.
