Education
The Trás-os-Montes masks symbolize life renewed in spring, the entry into a fruitful and prosperous time, the transition from puberty to adulthood. The community is revitalized and bonds are strengthened at these parties organized by boys, where even excesses serve to purge evils. The people still see them as if they were the devil himself. The most significant masks from Trás-os-Montes can be seen at the Museu Ibérico da Máscara e do Traje, in Bragança, and at the Museu Nacional de Etnologia, in Lisbon. Make your first visit here.
