We refer to Matrafona's disguise, a representation of the inversion of the social order and, in particular, the inversion of roles, which the Catholic Church has condemned for centuries. In this way, the Matrafonas translate, in essence, the presence of the interdict, broken for a brief period, so that, after this period is over, the social and religious order can be returned. Its origin most likely dates back to the end of the 19th century, when social satire began to characterize rural Shrovetide, and the lack of resources made access to old and out-of-use clothes easier. Afterwards, it would gain expression, in number, especially from the 1920s onwards.
