Education
Careto is a masked character from the carnival of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Portugal. He is a man who wears a mask with a protruding nose made of leather, brass, or wood painted brightly in yellow, red, or black.
Social and cultural aspects
In the 1970s, there were probably no more than two or three Careto costumes in the village. In the mid-1980s, with the return of some emigrants, the tradition of the "correrias" (rides) regained its old spirit - although "the Careto is nowadays more tame" - and the streets of the village were once again immersed in a babel of more than forty impish figures jumping around everywhere.
