Pasta loom

Education
This wooden, loom-shaped tool with metal strings is used to produce the so called «maccheroni alla chitarra», a kind of fresh egg pasta. The tool helped the Abruzzesi housewives to cut regularly the homemade spaghetti. The first prototype dates back to 1860, after steel wire, produced mainly in Germany, was introduced in Italy. The original name of the tool is «carratore» , a word first mentioned in a notary document of 1871, from the city Pescara, concerning the objects of a bride’s trousseau. The term «carratore» comes from the French word «carrer» (to square). This is another prove of the French influence on the Abruzzese dialect, that goes back to the Angevin period and was renewed in the 19th century, during the Murattian era. Only at the beginning of the twentieth century the term «carratore» was replaced with the current term «chitarra».
