The mask is an element of the Caretos costume (https://www.caretosdepodence.pt/). The Caretos tradition is thought to have Celtic roots, from a pre-Roman period. It is probably related to the existence of the Galician and Brácaros peoples in Galicia and northern Portugal.

The Caretos de Podence Carnival Party is held by the community of Podence, belonging to the district of Bragança.
