Summary
The paper deals with the genesis of the Museum of the Imperial Forums, established in Rome in 2007. Since 2014 this institution is member of the V-MUST project, the European network of virtual museums. The Glass Beacon Museum, a storytelling project hosted in this Museum in 2015, is based on 14 points of interest in the third and fourth level of the Trajan’s markets. The points of interests were as many statues, whose 3D reconstructions, available through Google Glass and Epson Moverio devices, were used as narrators of the history of the Trajan’s Markets.
Innovative VR tools and techniques
• The Glass Beacon Museum project deals with the use of beacons in an archeological museum in order to transmit texts, video and 3D reconstructions to Google Glass devices
• In this project, multimedia contents are projected also on Epson Moverio glasses through the use of markers
• The use of these tools aims at making clear the history and development of the Trajan’s markets through virtual reconstructions
VR in education
• In the Glass Beacon Museum project, 3D reconstructions of statues were used as the narrators of the history of the Trajan’s Markets
• Beacons were associated to Google Glass devices, in order to project multimedia contents on the lenses
• Epson Moverio glasses were also employed in the project, using the works of arts as markers
• The paper deals also with some problems in the use of Google Glass and Epson Moverio devices, such as the difficulty to employ them outdoor and/or for people with optical glasses
