Social and cultural aspects
This portrait, conserved in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale La Civitella at Chieti, is a vestige of the Roman past of this region. Datable to the late Roman Republic, possibly to the first century BC, this sculpture depicts a beardless man in his late age, crowned with sprigs of laurel and ears of wheat. This element should qualify the anonymous sitter as a member of the “fratres arvales”, an ancient and very exclusive priestly order formed by twelve members chosen among the patricians.
