Education
The 3D object is provided with eight interactive captions associated to as many points of interest of the sculptural group – in order to stress, for example, the damage caused to the sculptural group by the earthquake of 6 April 2009. These captions contribute to make this 3D object an efficient educational tool.
Social and cultural aspects
This terracotta, modelled in 1506, is one of the loveliest Madonna and Child groups of this region; the mother is represented in adoration of the baby, according to an iconography very common in this area. Its author is Saturnino Gatti, one of the main artists in Abruzzo at the beginning of the sixteenth century; he still reflects here the influence of Renaissance Florence, as the pose of the baby derives from an invention by Andrea Verrocchio. This sculptural group is relevant also because it has been extracted from the remains of the Church of Collemaggio in L’Aquila after the earthquake of 6 April 2009 – the base and the projecting parts still bear the traces of the catastrophic event.
