Education
Careto is a masked character from the carnival of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, Portugal. He is a man who wears a mask with a protruding nose made of leather, brass, or wood painted brightly in yellow, red, or black.
Social and cultural aspects
The facanito is a child who masquerades as a "careto" and tries to imitate the caretos in their revelry, fulfilling his own initiation ritual and ensuring the continuity of the tradition. In the Middle Ages in Trás-os-Montes it was referred to as a "little devil that feeds on ground steel". In Miranda do Douro, a town close by , it is the name given to a man of small stature with a provocative manner and is also how a mythological being, very small and restless, is designated.
