J. Zikaro

Education
Juozas Zikaras is considered to be the first professional sculptor in Lithuania and one of the most famous Lithuanian sculptors of the first half of the 20th century. One of his most famous works is the sculpture "Freedom". It is a fascinating allegory of freedom. The sculpture shows a female angel figure, whose wrist is decorated with a broken chain. This is a symbol of physical freedom, which allows us to identify the freedom of this figure with the liberation of the nation from the oppression of the Tsarist Russian power and the struggle against the Poles. To balance the sharp chain, in her other hand "Freedom" carries a belligerent, and perhaps hopeful, flag, which flutters dynamically behind her, between the wings of "Freedom".
