Lioness with the Prey, sculpture and nature

Objectives
With this lesson the objectives will be discover the work from an Italian contemporary artist, who was born in Abruzzo’s area. The activities will lead the participants to enjoy and understand the approach of the artist to the animal world, and to acquaint the intellectual process behind the making of the sculpture. Finally, the participants will lear concepts of art history such as volumetry, anatomy and iconography.

Technical/Digital Skills to be Possessed by the Teachers
Monitors/teachers should know how to communicate to the participants the activity and its objectives. Beforehand, it is desirable that the monitors/teachers learn about Venanzo Crocetti’s bio, his relation to Abruzzo’s cultural heritage and a brief catalogue of pieces. Also, it is important to understand artistic vocabulary and concepts.
Description of the Lesson Plan
Teaching Methodologies: Mediation.

Description of a practical activities: The practical activities are meant to engage participants with the object and the artist through active discussion and brainstorm. In this lesson, the monitor/teacher has to guide the discussion and share the important artistic concepts. The purpose of the final activity is to apply some of the concepts already discussed.

Step by step activities to complete the lesson plan:

Step 1 (5 min)
Introductory talk about the artist and his bio. Images/video of him and his work will be shown.

Step 2 (2 min)
The monitor/teacher explains the mediation methodology and how it works.

Step 3 (5 min)
Participants take a moment to look at the artwork very carefully using the 3D object.

Step 4 (5 min)
The monitor makes the engaging questions to the participants to create dialogue: “What are we looking at? What do you think is the meaning of this object?”.

Step 5 (10 min)
Participants make a brainstorm with the questions/answers made by them. 10 min.

Step 6 (11 min)
Discussion group using the concepts: volumetry, anatomy, expression, iconography.

Step 7 (2 min)
Closing comment by the monitor.

Step 8 (10 min)
Final activity: create your own little “Lioness” with clay, participants can use the 3D object to capture details and expression of the sculpture. Concepts like volumetry and anatomy can be discussed meanwhile.
